What a Laptop Screen Repair Costs, and What Changes the Price

In short

A laptop screen repair's price depends on five things about your exact laptop: the panel your model takes, touch or not, how the screen is built into the lid, what else broke in the drop, and whether it is a MacBook. Do the TV test first to confirm it is only the screen, then text the model sticker for a quote that includes the part before anything is ordered.

The most common question on the phone after “can you fix it” is “how much.” For a laptop screen the honest answer starts with “which laptop,” because two screens that look the same from the outside can be very different parts. This post walks through what actually sets the price, so the number makes sense when you hear it. The current labor rate is on the pricing page.

First: is it really the screen?

Before talking money, make sure the screen is the only problem. Plug the laptop into a TV with an HDMI cable and turn it on. If your desktop shows up on the TV, the computer is fine and the job is a screen. If the TV stays dark too, it is not the screen, and the post on a laptop that won’t turn on is the one you want. No sense pricing a screen for a laptop that needs something else.

The five things that set the price

  1. The exact panel your model takes. Laptop screens are not one size fits all. Resolution, brightness, refresh rate and the connector on the back all vary, and the right part is identified from your model and serial number, not from the size alone. A common 15-inch panel on a popular model is easy to get. A high-resolution or high-refresh panel on a less common model costs more and can take longer to arrive.
  2. Touch or not. A touchscreen is the display and the touch layer bonded together. It is a more expensive part than the same size without touch, and on some laptops the glass and the display only come as one piece.
  3. How the screen is built into the lid. On many laptops the panel sits behind a plastic frame and comes out on its own. On thinner models the glass is glued into the lid, and sometimes the screen is only sold as the whole lid assembly. More part, more time.
  4. What else broke with it. A drop that cracks the screen can also crack the hinge mounts or pinch the display cable. A screen that flickers when you move the lid is often the cable, not the panel at all, and that changes the job completely.
  5. MacBook or not. On most recent MacBooks the display is replaced as a complete assembly rather than a panel, which makes it a bigger part than most Windows laptops. See MacBook repair for how those go.

Does the brand change the price? HP, Dell, Lenovo

Less than people expect. “How much to fix an HP laptop screen” has the same answer as Dell or Lenovo: it depends on the model, not the logo. Two laptops from different brands with the same size, resolution and connector often take very similar panels, and two laptops from the same brand can take completely different ones. The model sticker matters more than the brand name on the lid.

Where brand does show up is in how the lid is built. Thin premium models and fold-over two-in-ones, from every maker, are the ones more likely to have touch glass or a screen sold only as a full assembly. That is the price difference, not the brand.

What a flickering or lined screen costs to fix

A flicker is the one screen problem where the answer can be smaller than a new screen. If the picture comes and goes as you move the lid, the display cable through the hinge is the usual cause, and the cable is a smaller part than the panel. If the lines or flicker stay no matter how the lid sits, and they do not show on a TV over HDMI, the panel itself is failing and it is priced like a cracked screen. If the same flicker shows on the TV too, it is not a screen at all. The flashlight and lid-angle checks in fix or replace tell you which before you pay for a part.

Can you replace a laptop screen yourself?

On some laptops, yes. Where the panel sits behind a snap-off plastic frame, it is a few screws and one cable, and the hard part is buying exactly the right panel for your model. On touchscreens, glued glass, and lids sold as one assembly, the risk of cracking the new part or tearing the cable goes up quickly, and a cracked new panel means buying it twice. If you are not sure which kind you have, text the model and I will tell you whether it is a reasonable home job.

How to get your real number

Text me the brand and model, usually on a sticker underneath, or a photo of the sticker. I look up the exact panel for that model and give you a quote that includes the part before anything is ordered. Nothing gets ordered until you say yes. Most screen replacements are done within about a day of the part arriving, and the laptop works normally on a TV or monitor while you wait.

When it is not worth it

A screen is usually worth replacing on a laptop that is otherwise healthy and a few years old. On an older machine with a slow drive and a tired battery, the screen can be the moment to put the money toward the next laptop instead, and move your files over properly. I will tell you which side of that line you are on. The longer version of that decision is in cracked laptop screen: fix or replace.

What I'd tell a neighbor

Do the TV test, find the model sticker, and send a photo. That gets you a real number for your exact laptop in one text, instead of a range that might not apply to you.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to fix a laptop screen?

It depends on the exact panel your model takes, whether it is a touchscreen, how the screen is built into the lid, and whether anything else broke. Labor rates are on the pricing page, and a quote for your model includes the part before anything is ordered.

Why do some laptop screens cost more to replace?

Touchscreens, high-resolution or high-refresh panels, screens glued into thin lids, and MacBook display assemblies are bigger or rarer parts. A common panel on a popular model is the least expensive.

How do I know only the screen is broken?

Plug the laptop into a TV with HDMI and turn it on. If the desktop appears on the TV, the computer is fine and only the screen needs replacing.

How fast can a laptop screen be replaced?

Usually within about a day of the panel arriving. The laptop works normally on a TV or monitor in the meantime.

How much does it cost to fix an HP laptop screen?

The same things decide it on HP, Dell or Lenovo: the exact panel the model takes, touch or not, and how the screen is built into the lid. Labor rates are on the pricing page, and a quote for your model includes the part before anything is ordered.

Can I replace a laptop screen myself?

On laptops where the panel sits behind a snap-off frame, often yes, with exactly the right part. Touchscreens, glued glass and screens sold as a whole lid are easy to damage, and a cracked new panel means buying it twice.
