Does my computer need more memory, and can it even take it?
If Task Manager shows memory sitting at 85 percent or more with a browser and one program open, yes, it needs more. A 4 GB machine is short for Windows 11 on its own. Whether it can take more is the real question: desktops and most laptops from before 2020 have slots, but many thin laptops and every MacBook since 2012 have memory soldered to the board, and no amount of wanting changes that.
I check the model before promising anything, tell you the maximum it supports and what it has now, and fit matched memory at your home. If memory is not the real cause of the slowness, which is common, you hear that, because a $50 memory job that does not fix the problem is not a good deal.

Dell
Inspiron and Latitude laptops mostly have one or two slots and go to 16 or 32 GB. XPS 13 models are soldered. The service tag tells me before you spend anything.
HP
Pavilion and ProBook laptops usually have slots. Envy and Spectre models are often soldered or half-soldered with one slot. HP Stream laptops cannot be upgraded at all.
Lenovo
ThinkPads are the best case: slots, easy access, and high maximums. IdeaPad and Yoga models vary, and many recent thin ones are fully soldered.
ASUS and Acer
Gaming models from both brands have two slots and take memory well. VivoBook, Zenbook, Swift, and Aspire thin models are often half-soldered, with one slot free.
Apple
Every MacBook since 2012 and every Apple silicon Mac has memory that cannot be upgraded. Older iMacs and the 2012 and earlier MacBook Pro can be, and it is worth it.
Desktops
Any desktop can take more memory. The only rules are matching the generation, DDR4 or DDR5, and fitting modules in pairs so they run at full speed.
