Laptop Won’t Turn On in Woodstock, GA

You pressed the power button, held it, tried again, and nothing. Or the light comes on and the screen stays black. Either way, the laptop is not dead until someone has actually tested the charger, the port, the battery, and the board, and most of the time it is one of the cheaper ones.

I’m Justin with Woodstock Computer Repair. I diagnose no-power laptops at your home, tell you what actually failed before anything is ordered, and if the laptop really is done, I get your files off the drive and onto whatever comes next. Diagnosis is free.

Sound Familiar?

No Lights, No Fans, Nothing

Completely dead. Charger, charging port, battery, or a power circuit on the board, in that order of likelihood.

Light On, Black Screen

The laptop is running but the display is dark. Often the screen or its cable, sometimes memory, and fixable either way.

Turns On, Then Off Again

Powers up for a few seconds and dies. Points at power delivery or heat, and it is diagnosable.

Only Runs on the Charger

Dies the instant the charger comes out: a failed battery, which is one of the cheapest repairs.

Blinking Lights or Beeps

The laptop is telling you the fault in code. I read Dell, HP, and Lenovo blink patterns before opening anything.

After a Spill or a Drop

Power off and leave it off. Fast cleaning is what saves the board; turning it on to check is what kills it.

What a Dead Laptop Usually Is

The order matters. Chargers fail more than batteries, batteries fail more than ports, and ports fail more than motherboards. I test in that order at your home, with a known-good power source and a meter, so you are never paying for a board diagnosis when a $30 charger was the problem.

When it is the board, we talk real numbers. On some laptops a board-level power repair is reasonable; on others the honest answer is that the machine owes you nothing. Either way the drive inside is almost always fine, and your photos, documents, and passwords come off it onto a new machine or an external drive.

Everything happens at your kitchen table, with you watching. If a part has to be ordered, you get the total first, and most repairs are finished within about 24 hours of the part arriving.

Turnaround: most hardware repairs are completed within about 24 hours — exact timing depends on the specific issue and, for replacements, parts availability for your model. You’ll always get an honest estimate of both cost and time before any work begins.

Warranty: every repair is backed by a 30-day workmanship warranty, and replacement parts carry their manufacturer’s warranty. If something I fixed acts up within a month, I come back and make it right.

Pricing: the most common repairs are flat fees, and everything else is $85 per hour plus parts, with the estimate confirmed up front. Free diagnostics, free phone consultation, and no trip charge. If it is not worth fixing, I will tell you that too.

Guarantee: if a fix I completed stops working, I come back and make it right. Simple as that.

My laptop won’t turn on, even after holding the power button

Holding the power button was the right first move. When that does nothing, the usual suspects in order are the charger and charging port, the battery, a power circuit on the motherboard, and, less often, a screen that stays dark while the laptop is actually running. Which one it is decides whether this is a small fix or a conversation about what the machine is worth.

I come to your home in Woodstock or anywhere in Cherokee County, test the charger under load, look for standby lights and fan spin, try a known-good power source and an external display, and tell you what actually failed before anything is ordered. If the laptop is done, the drive inside almost always is not, and your files come off it onto whatever comes next.

What it costs

Diagnosis is free and there is no trip charge. A failed battery is $50 labor plus the battery. A charging port repair or a board-level power problem is $85 per hour plus parts, with the estimate confirmed before I start.

How fast

Most no-power calls are diagnosed in the first visit, often the same day you call. Repairs that need a part are usually finished within about 24 hours of the part arriving for your model.

The guarantee

30-day warranty on the work and the manufacturer’s warranty on the part. If it cannot be fixed, the diagnosis still costs nothing.

By brand

Dell

Dell laptops keep a small charge in the board that can block startup. Unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug in and try again. Watch the charging light: a steady amber or a blink pattern narrows the cause quickly. Dell’s own diagnostics run from the F12 boot menu if the machine gets that far.

HP

HP laptops signal the problem with the caps lock and charging LEDs; a repeating blink count is HP’s error code and I read it before opening anything. Most HP models also run built-in hardware tests from the F2 key at power-on.

Lenovo

Most Lenovo laptops have a tiny emergency reset pinhole on the underside. A paperclip press for 10 seconds with the charger unplugged clears a stuck power state more often than you would expect. If the power light comes on but the screen stays black, the Novo button menu helps rule Windows in or out.

ASUS

ASUS laptops respond to a full power drain: charger out, hold the power button 40 seconds, reconnect. ASUS chargers are a frequent failure point and get checked first because they are the cheapest fix.

Acer

Many Acer laptops have a battery reset pinhole on the bottom; a 4-second press disconnects and reconnects the internal battery. Acer barrel-plug chargers also wear at the strain relief and can read fine at the wall while delivering nothing under load.

Apple

On MagSafe MacBooks the charger light tells the first half of the story: amber charging, green full, dark means no power reaching the board. Intel MacBooks have an SMC reset that clears power faults; Apple silicon models do not need it. More on the MacBook repair page.

Have this ready when you call or text

  • The brand and model, from the label on the bottom or the receipt
  • Whether any light comes on when the charger is plugged in
  • Whether the fans spin or you hear anything at all
  • What happened right before it died: an update, a drop, a spill, a storm
  • Whether you already tried a different charger

FAQs

Is it worth fixing a laptop that won't turn on?

Usually, yes, and the diagnosis is free either way. Most dead laptops are a charger, port, or battery. If it is the motherboard on an older machine, I will say so and save your files instead.

My laptop turns on but the screen is black. Is that the same thing?

No, and it is better news. A black screen with the power light on is usually the display, the display cable, or memory. Plugging in an external monitor tells us a lot in thirty seconds.

Are my files gone if the laptop is dead?

Almost never. The drive is separate from the power problem. I pull it and copy everything to a new machine or an external drive, even when the laptop itself is not worth repairing.

Do you come to the house for this?

Yes. I bring a known-good charger, a meter, and the tools to open the laptop, and I do the diagnosis at your home anywhere in Woodstock and Cherokee County. No trip charge.

What does it cost?

Diagnosis is free. A battery is $50 labor plus the battery. Port and board work is $85 per hour plus parts, with the estimate confirmed before I start.
