Keyboard or Driver? Finding Out First
Keyboards and touchpads fail in ways that look alike from the outside, which is why nothing is ordered before a real test at your home. A keyboard test tells me whether keys are dead or just unresponsive in Windows; a driver check tells me whether a touchpad is broken or merely disabled; a look at the battery tells me whether a lifting touchpad is a safety problem.
When it is the part, the model decides the repair. Some laptops have a keyboard that lifts out on its own; others build it into the palmrest, so the whole top assembly is replaced. That changes the price, and you hear it before I order anything.
A USB keyboard or mouse keeps you working while the part is on the way. Most replacements are fitted within about 24 hours of the part arriving.

Some keys stopped working and the touchpad is jumpy or dead
A few dead keys, a key that repeats, a touchpad that stopped after an update, or a cursor that jumps while you type are four different problems with four different fixes. Dead keys in a cluster usually mean the keyboard itself, and on a laptop that is a part swap. A touchpad that quit right after a Windows update is almost always a driver, not hardware, and costs nothing in parts. A jumping cursor is often the palm rejection setting or a swollen battery pushing up on the touchpad from underneath, which is a safety issue.
At your home I sort out which it is before ordering anything: keyboard test, driver check, a look at the battery. Keyboard replacements happen at your kitchen table once the part arrives. If a spilled drink is the reason, the earlier the laptop is opened and cleaned, the better the odds, so say so on the phone.

A keyboard or touchpad replacement is $85 per hour plus the part for your exact model, quoted before it is ordered. If the cause is a swollen battery, that is $50 labor plus the battery.

Software fixes are same-visit. Parts are ordered per model and usually fitted within about 24 hours of arriving. Some HP and Apple models need the whole top case, which takes longer to source and costs more; you hear that up front.

By brand
Dell
Inspiron and Latitude keyboards are separate parts that come out from under the palmrest, so a keyboard swap is a keyboard swap. Backlit and non-backlit versions are different parts; the service tag tells me which you have.
HP
On many HP Pavilion and Envy laptops the keyboard is riveted into the top cover, so the repair is a palmrest assembly, not a bare keyboard. It costs more and I will say so before ordering. HP touchpads also lose their driver after big Windows updates; that fix is free of parts.
Lenovo
ThinkPad keyboards are individual, well-made parts and a routine swap. IdeaPad and Yoga models usually need the palmrest assembly. Lenovo touchpads sometimes go dead after a BIOS update and come back with a driver reinstall.
ASUS and Acer
VivoBook, Zenbook, Aspire, and Swift keyboards are palmrest assemblies on most recent models. The backlight and language layout have to match exactly; I confirm from the serial.
Apple
MacBook keyboards are part of the top case, which includes the battery and trackpad, so it is the priciest keyboard repair there is. The 2016 to 2019 butterfly keyboards had an Apple service program that has now ended. On those models we talk honestly about whether the repair is worth it.
Any laptop after a spill
Power off and leave it off. Sticky keys after a spill mean sugar under the keycaps; a keyboard that types on its own means liquid reached the circuit. Fast cleaning is what saves the board underneath.

FAQs
Can you replace just the broken keys?
Sometimes, if a keycap has popped off and the mechanism under it is intact. Dead keys are usually the keyboard itself, which is replaced as a unit.
My touchpad stopped after a Windows update. Is it broken?
Almost certainly not. Updates replace touchpad drivers and sometimes disable them. It is a software fix, done in the visit.
Why does my cursor jump around while I type?
Either palm rejection needs adjusting or the battery under the touchpad has swelled and is pushing on it. I check the battery first because a swollen one should not be charged.
