Finding the Real Cause Before Buying a Card
A screen that freezes while still lit is a graphics hang. A screen that goes black with the machine restarting is power or heat. That one detail narrows the problem before the case is even open, and it is why I ask what you saw, not just that it crashed. Windows keeps a record of every crash, and when the graphics driver is the cause the record says so by name.
Then I check the physical things nobody checks: is the card seated all the way in the slot, is the extra power cable clicked in, does the fan spin, and how hot does the card run under a real load. A card that was fine until the desktop was moved is almost always a reseat. A card that crashes only after twenty minutes of gaming is almost always heat.

By what you have
NVIDIA GeForce
Driver trouble shows up as a flicker and a “display driver stopped responding” message. Reinstalling on top of an old driver rarely fixes it; the old one has to be stripped out first. Most GeForce cards from the last several years are worth keeping.
AMD Radeon

Intel and AMD integrated graphics

Laptops

Plug the monitor into a different computer, or a different monitor into this one. If the picture follows the computer, it is the card or the cable. I test with a different cable and, when needed, a different monitor in the first minutes of the visit.
Can a graphics card be repaired, or only replaced?
